The Fall of the AGI Myth — Yann LeCun’s “SAI” and the Return to Physical Reality

“Human-like Generality is a Fiction”: Yann LeCun Sparks a Paradigm Shift Toward SAI

1. The Deconstruction of the AGI Idol
Yann LeCun, one of the “Godfathers of AI,” has delivered a direct hit to the tech industry’s obsession with AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), calling it a “fiction.” He argues that aiming for human-level AGI is a fundamental error. Instead, the world must shift its focus toward SAI (Superhuman Adaptive Intelligence).

LeCun asserts that even human intelligence is not truly “general.” It is a highly specialized form of intelligence evolved for survival within a narrow range of physical tasks.

“The belief that human intelligence is ‘general’ is itself a fiction. Generality is neither a clear technical metric nor an agreed-upon concept.” (Yann LeCun)

2. From LLMs to “World Models”
LeCun’s most provocative claim is the impending death of the current LLM (Large Language Model) paradigm. He argues that LLMs only play with “logic” and “language” but lack an understanding of causal relationships and the physical principles of the real world.

  • SAI (Superhuman Adaptive Intelligence): The core of SAI is Adaptability—the ability for AI to learn from new environments and adapt autonomously.
  • World Models: To achieve SAI, AI must possess a “World Model” capable of inferring physical reality and causal links. LeCun predicts that “no sane person will use current LLMs” within 3 to 5 years once World Models become dominant.

3. AMI Labs and the $1 Billion Bet
LeCun, who led Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) since 2013, departed the company late last year to found AMI Labs. On March 10, the startup secured $1.03 billion in funding to commercialize AI systems based on World Models. This massive investment signals that the market is shifting away from “chatbots” and toward intelligence that can dominate the physical layer of reality.

Conclusion: Intelligence as Adaptation, Not Understanding With the collapse of the AGI idol, we are left with a meritocracy of “Adaptability.” When AI acquires World Models and decodes physical laws, it no longer needs to mimic humans. We are entering an era where intelligence is no longer a tool for thought, but a mechanism for rewriting reality itself.
